Parliament Masterclass hosted by Hounslow's Promise

On Thursday 20th March 2025, Hounslow’s Promise was proud to host a Parliament Masterclass, welcoming over 40 students from six local secondary schools: Chiswick School, Logic Studio, St Mark’s Catholic School, Cranford Community College, Gunnersbury School and Reach Academy.

The event, held at the Palace of Westminster, offered students a unique insight into how Parliament works. Seema Malhotra MP hosted the masterclass and covered how legislation is created, and discussed the relationship between Parliament and Government alongside how the House of Commons and House of Lords are responsible for holding the Government to account, passing Bills, deciding budgets and taxes and the ways in which Members of Parliament represent the interests of their constituents through questions and debates. It was fantastic to see the curiosity of the students and their desire to learn more about the nature of Politics and Parliament.

Led by our host and supported by teachers and Hounslow’s Promise mentors, the session included a deep dive into the Order Paper and the day-to-day responsibilities of MPs.

A special highlight was a talk from Senior Bar Doorkeeper Sarah Binstead-Chapman, who shared her personal journey and offered a behind-the-scenes look at her role in Parliament.

The Masterclass concluded with a tour of Westminster Hall, St Stephen’s Hall, Central Lobby and the House of Commons Chamber, sparking thoughtful questions and discussions among students.

We are grateful to the schools, teachers, mentors and supporters who made this event possible. Opportunities like these are key to inspiring young people across Hounslow to explore different career paths and engage with civic life. We look forward to working with leaders from across different industries, professions and workplaces to support an ongoing programme of masterclasses in the future.
