My name is Lerin and I have been volunteering in Hounslow for almost 3 years. I volunteer with the Heston West Big Local and help people in the community, for example organising clean up days to help the local area. Currently I am working alongside Creative Spaces London in a project called ‘The Dance Works’ with children ages 6-11.
Personally, I really enjoy volunteering because it helps me develop numerous skills. One of the best things is meeting new people, as well as learning, listening, and communicating with them. In my project ‘The Dance Works’ I got a chance to improve further on these skills, for example organisation. These skills not only help me during volunteering, but also in school. However, one of the disadvantages is finding time to balance both school and volunteering; it can be hard to attend all of the volunteering events when I have a big workload from school. I aspire to work hard and obtain good grades at a level in order to get into a good university. I am still exploring the options of what degrees I would like to pursue. I am particularly interested in maths and hope to further explore this subject as I get older. My advice to a young person who would want to volunteer is do it! Do it now! It can seem intimidating and can be boring at the start, but once you understand why you’re volunteering and meet the right people, it starts to seem fun. At first, I thought I would volunteer to gain experience and I never would’ve thought it would be this fun! Do it now! |
